Brooklyn

It's hard to believe that I adopted Brooklyn from you all just 4 years ago; it seems like he's been with me for so much longer. I remember when I came to the rescue to meet Brooklyn and you all said that Brooklyn was "one of the best dogs you've ever had there". You all were right in what a special boy he is. He truely is unique in personality, intellegence & endless ability to love. I am not sure if you guys remember the poor shape that Brooklyn was brought to you all in, neglect from the people he trusted was reflected not only in his emaciated body but in his sad, fearfull eyes. I take his adoption pictures out and stare in disbelief because I don't even recognize that sad skinny boy anymore. He grew into such a handsome dog! He was in the "medium dog" catagory (because of how skinny he was at the rescue and already 9 months old) & that would have him topping out at 50 lbs; he is now a four year-old 73 POUND HEALTHY, STRONG, MUSCULAR BOXER !! He truley is very handsome & healthy; people ask me all the time " What breeder did you get him from, he's gorgeous!".

I love answering with "he's a rescue- I wish more people rescued". Even though Brooklyn grew into a handsome boy on the outside, it's the development of his inside beauty that I'm most thankful for. Even at just 9 months, he had experienced more hardship that I can imagine. He was so insecure & cautious, it broke my heart to see in his eyes both the strong need to be loved and the fear of being mistreated again. I didn't know if his little heart could ever be mended, but I knew he deserved somebody that would give him a home with the love & security he deserved.

I look back now & see how much I truley underestimated his capacity to transform into a happy, confident, trusting dog that has an unlimited amount of unconditional love to both give and recieve. His story is an inspiration to me; he had the courage and capcity to trust people again after being failed so completley by the first people he knew. It makes me think of all the neglected, abused animals that are out there somewhere just waiting for someone to rescue them and give them the chance they deserved from the very beginning. I always heard people say that there is a special bond you have with a rescued animal because they never forget that you were the one to save them. I've been blessed to have wonderful dogs all my life; but Brooklyn is my first rescue, and I can say that there is without a doubt a different level of appreciation, trust and love from him. To this day, adopting him is one of the best decisions I've ever made.

It's a shame

I have not yet adopted a dog from the APR but have been looking on this site for a while. I have a 14 year old dog who is the love of my life. We are seriously considering adopting a dog from the APR because there are so many precious creature who need human love and help. I am crushed that so many are returned. If you dont think you are ready for a new member of your family please think twice and three times before getting one of these special creatures hopes up by taking them home only to be returned later. These babies have been through enough horror to last a lifetime. So PLEASE dont adopt one unless you are absolutely sure this is the route you want to take. Thank you.

Tamino & Papageno (formerly Kibbles & Bits)

Attn. All Kittens and Puppies, Cats and Dogs, Young or Old:
Adopt YOUR Humans Through Atlanta Pet Rescue !

In May 2006, I saw the above photo at Atlanta Pet Rescue.org and showed it to my wife.

"These are OUR kittens," I announced.

These two brothers had been born to Jellybean, a beautiful calico, who, thanks to a kindhearted soul with APR, had been rescued from a local animal-control shelter just before she was scheduled to be euthanized.

After her kittens were weaned, Jellybean adopted her humans through APR. Soon after, Tamino (formerly Kibbles) and Papageno (formerly Bits) adopted us through APR's wonderful program.

Four years later, they continue to provide unconditional love and companionship as they play and purr their way ever deeper into our hearts.

Out heartfelt thanks go out to all APR volunteers and staff, for what each of you do to bring such joy to so many people and their very special rescue pets.

Happy 4th birthday, Papageno & Tamino! A donation has been made in their names as a small token of our thanks….

Penny (formerly Cindy Lou)

Thank you all again... The experience was one of a kind! Penny has been a PERFECT fit to our home...

My 90 year old aunt and I share this house, and Miss Penny has made her tiny self right at home. Sitting in the office (work from home) and taking naps (with aunt Elois)... I'm so glad we choose your group to find our "baby". The staff really listened to our needs and what dog would be best, and, as soon as Penny was introduced, the FIT was made!

Thank you all so very much!

Hank is Happy!

Dear friends at Atlanta Pet Rescue,

I'm such a happy pup now that I found my forever home with my mom. We live in a quiet condo in Decatur where I'm top dog. My mom gives me plenty of room to run and schedules play dates with other canine companions whenever she can. And I really love chasing the squirrels behind our house!

When my mom first brought me home, I was a little nervous being in a new place. But it's been almost a year since she brought me home and I've loved every minute! I get along great with her friends and family, although I do bark at them when they first walk in the door so they know to pet me later. And I'm much better around men and other dogs now because my mom helped me realize that they weren't going to hurt me but would rub my belly if I was acting like a gentleman!

I'm so happy and healthy that I don't think that I'll ever leave. And I hope to not have to go back to Atlanta Pet Rescue... unless I can convince my mom to get another dog for me to play with!

Thank you to Atlanta Pet Rescue and my former foster dad for all that they did for me.

Woof woof,
Hank, the miniature pinscher

Happy Tail

Just wanted to share some pictures we took of our dear little Sally today - she's such a little love and such a part of our family now. I'm only sorry she never got to meet our dear Li'lB - they would have been great friends!

The first thing we did on the way home was stop by PetSmart and get her a brand new halter that wouldn't fall off and a new name tag with our contact phone numbers on the back. (Don't worry, we also attached the alternate tag you folks provided and thank you for being so careful with our new baby!) The new halter and tag are both fitted out with rhinestones - she's got her "bling", all right! She slept well in her sleepy crate in our bedroom until @5:30 am. Then, just like Li'lB before her, she made some little noises to say "gotta go", so I took her out, put on her halter, etc. and let her go potty on the pad in our bathroom - with some coaxing! Once she was done, she hopped right up into our bed and snuggled in as if she'd always been there! At first, she curled up into a tight ball, but after a few minutes of tight snuggling, she unrolled herself, stretched out fully, and flopped over onto her back for some tummy-scratching - again, just like Li'lB.

We went for a little walk this afternoon at the Chattahoochee River Park and everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE, had to stop and admire her. She had to investigate them, trying to jump up and give kisses to young and old alike. We think she is going to make an AMAZING therapy dog and I can hardly wait to start her official training. We have already been practicing "sit" and done very well with that, even without treats. She is still having trouble with "down" but we've only had her for one day so that's not really an issue!!!!! Most small dogs do have a problem with that one because it makes them so vulnerable, but we have every confidence in our smart little Sally.

Thank y'all so very much for allowing us to bring this lovely little bundle of joy into our home. We still miss Li'lB, and took Sally down to Li'lB's gravesight earlier this evening to water the plants on her grave. They are not the same, each with their individual little personalities, yet both so loving and so sweet - we have been truly blessed and want to again say thank you, especially thanks to Amy for being so open to us.

Much love & God bless,
Christine & Larry H., and sons Alexander and Nicholas

Murphy (formerly Adama)

We adopted Adama back on March 27th. We changed her name to Murphy and to date she is doing well. She is still getting used to our voices and her name but is coming along. We are also still working on potty training.

She is truly a puppy and is such fun to watch and play with. She runs/walks well on a leash and absolutely loves the treadmill! On a rainy day when we can't get outside for a walk we fight over the treadmill…Murphy always wins!

Thank you for saving her and allowing us to adopt her. We look forward to a long life together.

Tripp (formerly Marley)

Marley (Tripp) and I are doing great and having loads of fun and cuddle time!

Funny story #1 - As soon as we got home, he discovered himself in the mirror, hair standing on end, bouncing around, wondering who that other kitty was - it was so funny ;-)

Here are a few cute pics, and I will keep you updated.

He is awesome, and a Tripp!

Long Tall Sally comes home!

Long Tall Sally is a 2-year-old female Yorkie-??? maybe poodle, maybe schnauzer, definitely GAZELLE - oh, those long, long legs! She chose us when we came this past Saturday 4/10/10 to look at dogs for possible adoption.

We had just lost our beloved Li'lB, a female purebred Yorkie born on Valentine's Day 2008, who passed away last Saturday night 4/3/10 at the age of only 26 months for no apparent reason. I had been playing my harp at church for the prelude before the Vigil Mass and when I came home, Li'l B was in the dining room window waiting for us as always. She was so happy to see us and as usual, jumped up into my arms and gave me lots of Yorkie kisses. When she was satisfied she had enough attention, she wanted down and again as usual, she ran into the dining room where she usually had a toy or two stashed under the table. I headed upstairs to change out of my gown and she usually would have followed with her toy of choice for some play while I changed clothes, but this time she didn't. I called to her and she didn't respond. By the time I got to the top of the stairs and called her a second time, she still hadn't responded. My husband, who had been in the kitchen, yelled out to me to
come back downstairs because he had just found Li'lB under the dining room table, simply lying stretched out on her side, dead. After inspecting her for possible causes, we noted there was nothing to be found, i.e. nothing choking her (we even tried to resuscitate her but to no avail), and nothing causing her to writhe in pain that we could tell from her final resting position; she had simply rolled over onto her side and died. The vet thinks it was a congenital problem, causing either a heart attack, sudden anneurism or stroke, especially considering that she was such a young and otherwise totally healthy dog. We buried her in the backyard on Easter Sunday in the early evening and are all still quite devastated. It was a total shock!

Although Li'l B can never be replaced, we are so very fortunate to have been found by our lovely little Sally, another very sweet and distinctly individual dog. She spotted us when we got out of the car and immediately came over to the outside fenced area, sat down and put her head back so that my husband, sons and I could scratch her neck. Even when other people came by to look at her, she seemed to gravitate back to one of us. When my older son started paying attention to another dog which suddenly came between him and her, she barked at it and pushed it out of the way as if to say, "hey, these are my people, go get your own"! We fell in love with her immediately, and once inside the shelter, she took immediate occupancy of our laps - and our hearts! We brought her home and she has definitely filled the terrible hole in our hearts left by our beloved Li'lB. We can't thank you folks enough for letting us bring home our little "bundle of joy"!

Sally has already started to learn "sit", "down" and "heel", but her official training classes start this Saturday. Li'lB had been trained and working as a therapy dog, going with me to nursing homes when I perform to visit with the patients before, during and after the show. Hopefully Sally will fill those shoes as well - all 4 of them! Again, thank you so much - we love our Long-Tall Sally and hope to have her for many happy years to come.

Attached are 2 photos of our new baby, Sally - isn't she just the sweetest little thing? Please take note of her long legs and her new "bling", too! There is also one of our dearly departed Li'lB - rest in peace, dear heart! We know you're at the Rainbow Bridge and pray to meet up with you there someday!!!

Mia (formerly Hops)

My husband and I adopted Mia (formerly known as Hops) on March 27th, 2010. We brought along our other dog, Jamos with us to see little Mia. We were so glad to see them get along fine! We were so happy to give Mia a warm and loving home.

Mia is such a sweet dog, she loves to sit in our laps and get some tummy rubs. When we adopted her, she had some hotspots on her back, but now her skin is all healed, but there are still some little bald patches! We hope that her fur will grow back quickly!

Mia and Jamos (her older brother!) love to take walks with us during the day. She loves sunbathing as well! We took her to a dog park this weekend and she had so much fun with the other dogs there. We hope that she will be with us for a long time, and we will continue to give all our dogs a lot of our love and care.

Our Sweet Feebee

Last April we went to Atlanta Pet Rescue to find a small dog, after going to the humane society in our area and not having any luck. Looking for a dog was very sad, because all the dogs we saw looked so sad and helpless and in need of a good home. They would all look up at you with those soulful eyes as if they were saying, "please take me." When we came to Atlanta Pet Rescue, we saw they had many small dogs, so it was hard to decide. When we looked out over all the sweet little dogs, there was one little Shih-tsu by herself back in the corner on a little cot. She wasn't jumping and barking like the others. She looked so sad. They called her Frannie, and said she had just come over from a place in Alabama. They did not know a lot about her, but thought she was about 1 1/2 years old. We went back into a room and they brought her to us. She was so quiet and sweet. She just put her little paws around my neck and I fell in love. We took her home, and my husband, who d
id not want a dog, especially one in the house, also fell in love with her in no time. We were getting over the loss of our daugther from just a year before, and were very lonely. Our daughters children who had been living with us since her separation from her husband, went back to live with their father, and things were very quiet and lonely at home. Our little dog has helped fill some void in our lives. She is so loving and sweet and a wonderful companion. It took no time to train her and she loves us and especially our grandchildren, when they come to visit. Everytime someone comes to visit, she thinks they are coming to see her, and immediatly wants their attention. They all fall in love with her. She has filled our hearts with love and joy. She is our first pet ever, and the best thing that has happened to us in a long time. Thank you Pet Rescue for your good work, and for letting us adopt our sweet little Feebee (that is the name we gave her).

Oliver (formerly Armando)

I adopted Oliver aka Ollie from APR on September 12, 2009. He celebrated his 1st birthday this February and is so happy to have a home. We have been so busy hanging out that we forgot to send a Happy Tail or should I say Super Super Happy Tail Story!

Ollie is a lovable dog and makes friends with everyone. He was a little nervous at first thinking that I would leave and never come home but now he knows I would NEVER leave him.

About Adopting Ollie:

I knew that I wanted a Boston Terrier for several years before I found Ollie. I started searching petfinder.com this summer and came across many dogs but one stood out, Armando. He was not available for adoption and was in rehab so I kept looking; however, something kept bringing me back to his profile. One Wednesday, I checked it again and he was available for adoption. I got very excited and had a feeling this was the Boston for me. I showed up at APR 30 minutes early and it was fate that I did for others were interested in "Armando." Luckily, I was able to take him home. We have been best friends ever since!

About Ollie:

Nicknames: Olliedog, Olli-licious, O-dog, Ollers, Olive, Oliv-e-ay Ollie-mando, Stinky (yes very), Mosquito, Snuggles, Yoda, Alien, Little Weenie ... Oliver has lots of nicknames and lots of friends.

He has two girlfriends (Lucy the Boston Terrier and Beatrice the French Bulldog) and many boyfriends too!

Ollie likes to visit Petsmart a lot and always finds a new toy to bring home. He passed his beginner training class and knows how to shake and likes to show off his skills. He is very smart and always knows to sit thinking that someone might give him a treat.

Ollie likes to cruise the neighborhood and is always meeting new people on our walks. I often hear people exclaim how cute he is with those "huge" ears and expressive eyes.

Ollie's big news:

Ollie is getting ready for a move this summer to nyc! He is excited to be a city dog and has started practicing his curbing. He cannot wait to strut his stuff in the village and meet new friends.

Ollie is the best thing to ever happen to me! Thanks APR!

Sophie (formerly poopchick)

I adopted Sophie (pictured left) from APR last year. She was pretty shy at first, but warmed up quickly. She has brought so much joy to mine and her new sister's (pictured right) life. The Siamese is very predominant in this little girl, as she will talk your ear off...she just lloves to be loved. I am so happy she is now a part of my life. Thank you APR!!
